The American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM)’s Development Department is a fast-paced environment that manages all fundraising initiatives, including annual giving, public and private grants, sponsorships, planned giving, major gifts, fundraising events, and AVAM’s membership program.

The Development Department at AVAM is seeking a Development Coordinator. This is a full-time salaried position reporting to the Executive Director and COO.



Responsible for managing the Museum’s fundraising and donor software program.

Develops and maintains efficient and accurate systems for tracking gifts, grants, financial flows; coordinates and ensures timely serving of both grant renewals and new grant submissions and required reports.

Keep accurate records, donor histories and member profiles; helps maintain and assure positive communication, acknowledgement, and interaction with donors and patrons.

Responsible for providing direct logistical and administrative support to the array of the Museum’s fundraising activities.

Fundraising activities include, but not limited to:

  • Donor cultivation
  • Annual campaign efforts
  • Processing gifts
  • Writing acknowledgment letters
  • Multi-year pledge campaign communication and tracking
  • Event sponsorship requests
  • Conducts prospect research
  • Support Executive Director in fundraising materials and tours when requested
  • Capable of clear verbal and written statement of AVAM's mission, strengths, history, and support opportunities
  • Assists in the implementation of long-range donor identification/cultivation, legacy endowment efforts, naming opportunities, municipal grants, and annual operational gifts
  • Grant/Foundation research
  • Grant Writing
  • Grant Tracking

Working with the Executive Director and staff, to help plan; creates timeliness and works the following programs and events:

  • Annual Conference
  • Annual Gala
  • Flicks from the Hill development initiatives including sponsorship, slideshow ads, movie on-site advertising, movie premier party and pre-movie events
  • Kinetic Sculpture Race development initiatives
  • Sock Monkey Saturday development initiatives


Responsible for accurately completing all development related tasks by the designated deadline outlined by departmental and master timelines.


  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree (Business, Non-Profit Management or related field).
  • 3-5 years’ experience in and documented success in development, grant writing, membership and non-profit fundraising.
  • Proficient in Fundraising and Donor Management software (eTapestry preferred).

  • Strong written communication skills: ability to write clearly structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals
  • Strong editing skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment
  • Able to handle multiple assignments concurrently
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources
  • Experience with institutional donors
  • Advanced research and fundraising techniques and strategies
