The American Visionary Art Museum is seeking a dynamic, articulate, organized and creative person for a contract position of Teaching Artist. This position will collaborate with both AVAM’s Education Team and the librarians at the Enoch Pratt Free Library (Waverly Branch) to lead free After School art workshops for students at the library. This is a contract position that is grant funded. A stipend is provided for each workshop.


  • Lead weekly art programs at the Waverly Branch of the library for students.
  • Teach students about visionary art and artists.
  • Represent AVAM, answer questions and be a spokesperson for our programming.
  • Support students in their creative endeavors, encourage them and build up confidence.
  • Gather information for evaluating the programs.
  • Coordinate with AVAM’s Education Team regarding supplies and weekly curriculum.
  • Report to the Education Team about progress, supplies and feedback.
  • Document projects and workshops at the library.


  • Experience teaching and working with students.
  • Experience as an artist and comfortable working with unusual material.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Experience with public speaking.
